What do you want out of 2022?

I mean, aside from an end to the pandemic, world hunger, violence, etc. Those are all huge systemic and infrastructural problems that we as individual humans can’t control or solve on our own.

What do you actually want, for yourself, that is within your control?

I’m not asking what others have said they’d like you to do, or told you that you should do. Because there’s a lot of that going around.

There’s a lot of: “You should create a course,” and “You should read this book,” and “You should take that job.” And it’s not all necessarily bad advice. But it’s not all good, either, or right for you.

What others want for us can seem very alluring — risk-free, simple, doable, even easy. It’s taken me decades to figure out what I actually want for myself (and what I’m allowed to want for myself) vs. what others have told me for years that I should want.

But often, when chasing someone else’s dreams for us (or deferred dreams for themselves), we sideline or give up on our own dreams. And it’s often a gradual thing that we don’t even notice is happening, until we wake up one day and realize that we’ve gone down a path that isn’t our own.

What do you want your path to be? What do you want (or what did you used to want, years ago) that others may have convinced you is unreasonable, unworthy, or won’t make you enough money?

What does your heart yearn for?

The start of a new year isn’t magic. But we are.

Words & warmth,
Sarah
