Do you ever doubt your creative abilities? Because I do! … My own creative abilities, I mean. Not yours.

It can be really hard to believe in ourselves constantly, even if deep down, we know we’re good at what we do. Because those doubts can creep in about not only our work, but ourselves, and leave us second-guessing about even the most important things — like our identity as a creator.

It’s so important to remember and reinforce what’s true, even when those truths are difficult to believe. And it’s important to do so in a way that is positive, loving, kind, and grace-filled.

One way that we can do this is by daily affirmations — a daily exercise where we speak truth about and to ourselves.

I know, it’s really easy to laugh off the idea — especially if you’ve seen ridiculous portrayals of affirmations on TV shows like “30 Rock” (content warning: light swearing in this clip).

But then there’s examples like this one, where an adorable little girl named Jessica reminds herself that “I can do anything good,” and that she loves her family, her place in life, and her hair. It’s surprisingly uplifting — and it’s exactly how I want YOU to feel about being a writer.

So where do you start? I’ve put together a FREE one-sheet PDF of affirmations that I invite you to try out. (The first affirmation says “I am a writer”, but please feel free to scribble out “writer” and replace it with “podcaster”, “painter”, “baker”, “coach”, “artist”, or whatever applies to you.)

You can start by saying just one affirmation out loud to yourself in the morning, or several, or all of them. You can even write your own if you prefer — whatever works best for you.

When you say these affirmations, whether to yourself in the bathroom mirror, in the car, on a walk, or with a partner, focus on feeling the truth beneath them.

Because only you can establish and believe your own truth. No one else can force you to believe anything about yourself,  good or bad. And since we’re the hardest people to convince of our own talent and worth, it is crucial we take the time to reestablish these truths to ourselves every day.

When you respect yourself and recognize your own great worth, there’s no telling what you can accomplish.

Words & warmth,
Sarah
